Was $5.00 and moved ahead of some to finish 4th last time here and competing in an easier class. Displays good tactical speed. Ideal distance as proven previously. Should go close.

Second-up. First-up after five months 4th of 10 in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at this track on September 12 over 1600m, 4 len behind Sheza Alibi carrying 59kg at $5. Previously second-up eased back early on 3rd in a small field in the G1 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill on March 21 over 2000m, slow going 1.1 len behind Aeliana with 59kg at $3. Did more than enough fresh, he'll improve again but his best would win.

Last year's winner returning for another crack. Found the line nicely when resuming and has good second-up form. Hard to beat.

A G1 winner over 1600m last start, he has also recorded another top-level success at 2000m this campaign. Now at the sixth run of the preparation, the 59kg is the key concern, but his class makes him the horse to beat.

Good run when placing 2nd last run at Randwick and going down in grade. Should race on the speed. Has a good draw. Definite contender.

Third-up today and won third-up in the past. First-up ran last of 11 in the G1 Winx Stakes at Randwick on August 22 over 1400m, slow going 10 len behind Autumn Glow with 57kg at $14. Last start 2nd in a small field in the G2 7 Stakes at Randwick on September 19 over 1600m, 1.3 len behind Autumn Glow with 57kg at $21. Much better second up and gets every chance third up to 2000m.

Got too far back off a slow start (good sectionals) when resuming. Tried hard behind a star last time. Close-up fifth in this last year.

Fifth-up and a G2 runner-up over 1600m last start, she has G1 wins at 2000m and 2400m earlier in the campaign. The 2000m suits and the mare is difficult to beat.

Racing well recently. Last start raced on speed throughout when 2nd of 8 in the G1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 19 over 1800m, 1.75 len behind Birdman carrying 59kg at $2.25. The race before that 3rd of 12 in the G1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on August 29 over 1400m, slow going 3.5 len behind Beiwacht with 59kg at $3.30. Can improve again. Had his chance latest but draws well and will like the ground.

Looks nicely primed for the 2000m, having performed well at two runs since the two wins to begin this prep. include again.

A G1 runner-up over 1800m last start after another strong black-type performance two runs earlier. Six runs into the preparation, the rise to 2000m appears suitable and the gelding has strong claims.

Was strong late when 2nd last start at Caulfield and have to respect the form at this trip. Tracking very well this campaign but competing at a higher grade. Watch betting.

Last start 2nd of 16 in the G3 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield on September 19 over 2000m, 1.0 len behind Zahrann with 58.5kg at $3.60. The start before that won by 1.3 len in a Qlty at Caulfield on August 29 over 2000m in soft going defeating Litzdeel with 61.5kg at $5.50. Keeps racing well but this is a tough ask.

Easy winner at Caulfield then game there in the Naturalism, giving the winner weight. Unbeaten from two Flemington starts at this trip.

Five runs into the preparation and a G3 runner-up over 2000m last start after back-to-back wins at the same distance. The 55kg is favourable relative to the latest performance, and the gelding presents a serious each-way case.

Ran home strongly to win last start at Caulfield and has the ideal barrier. Racing in stronger company. Will need everything to go right.

Third-up today and won third-up previously. First-up 4th of 16 in a LR Heatherlie Stakes at Caulfield on August 29 over 1700m, slow going 1.75 len behind Kingswood with 57kg at $11. Last start favourite; came from midfield and won by 1.0 len in the G3 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield on September 19 over 2000m defeating Saint George with 55kg at $3.20. Tougher here, this looks a bit of a trial for the Cups.

Did a good job winning the Naturalism at only his second run in. Still has upside and can measure up here without surprising.

A last-start G3 winner over 2000m after finishing fourth on soft ground at 1700m. Third-up with 55kg and a forward map, the horse is well placed to progress again.

Rose to this trip in the Kingston Town third up and was game to the line. Tougher test here. Best to go both ways.

Close up despite not racing in the best part of the track in the Naturalism. Fitter and was sixth in this race last year.

Eight-up and eighth in a G3 over 2000m last start after a third and a fifth in black-type company. The 55kg and on-pace map are helpful, but the gelding needs to improve sharply.

Racing and Sports

AELIANA (5) produced a solid effort last time when second over 1600m in the G2 7 Stakes at Randwick after she got a long way back in the run. Won't be bothered by this longer journey. Finds the ideal assignment. SIR DELIUS (2) was back from a spell last start and finished fourth over 1600m in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at this track, beaten 4 lengths. Has a strong record when second-up, including two wins, and is suited by the extra ground. Among the leading chances. COSMIC CRUSADER (4) was in the firing line all the way and fought on for second last start over 1800m in the G1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield, making it two minor placings in a row. Has the ability to figure prominently. BUCKAROO (11) was beaten 4.5 lengths into fifth at the second run back from a break over 1800m at Caulfield two weeks ago. Well placed and can figure in the finish this time.

Dabble

Fourteen runners in the Turnbull Stakes and plenty of rain coming should put us in a Heavy range. Not a great deal of speed on paper with Light Infantry Man taking up the running from barrier 3 and Sir Delius parking on his outside. Aeliana and Cosmic Crusader have options to settle a bit closer from the low draws but I doubt Cosmic Crusader wants to burn petrol early. Under the set weight and penalty conditions Sir Delius has to carry and extra kilo this year (59kg) and produce a figure of 111+ which he has done twice. He's a strong chance and deserved favourite but I can't be with him at $3. Aeliana was right back on track behind Autumn Glow however she's more effective over further and I doubt the tempo will suit. Cosmic Cursader has to be a risk at 2000m - his best ratings are around a mile. Two horses that stick out are Light Infantry Man and Buckaroo. Light Infantry Man is 3: 2-0-0 at the track & distance - he will get a soft run throughout and has the ratings to win this. Buckaroo has rated 107 or better 11 times in his career and loves a wet track. He's very well suited by the conditions of this race with 55kg. I'm happy to be with both at odds. SIR DELIUS (2) Picked up some ground to run 4th last run at this track and strong performer at this distance. Expecting to settle positively. Competing at a lower grade. Sure to be thereabouts. BUCKAROO (11) Passed some rivals in the late stages when 5th last time at Caulfield and taking on easier opposition. Gets some weight relief. Must respect. AELIANA (5) Displayed good finishing speed when 2nd last time at Randwick and will appreciate the drop in class. Has good tactical speed and will be nicely positioned. Has a good draw. Can give this a shake. COSMIC CRUSADER (4) Produced an eye catching run when 2nd beaten by 1 3/4L last time at Caulfield and has been racing in stronger company. Amongst the placegetters at every start this preparation. Good each way value for punters.

Racing and Sports

Onto our feature and a cracking race awaits. It wasn't alarm bells for AELIANA (5) first up but it was nice to see her bounce back second up in the 7 Stakes, really motoring late to grab second behind Autumn Glow. She'll have other targets in the Spring but is very well suited to 2000m and on a wet track. She did beat SIR DELIUS (2) over this trip on a soft track in the Ranvet when 3rd up and SIR DELIUS was 2nd up which is the exact same scenario here. SIR DELIUS was fine fresh in the Makybe Diva in a slowly run race. He'll improve up in trip but we know Cox Plate day is when he'll be set to peak. Want to keep BUCKAROO (11) on side. Two runs back have been fine and this looks a real target from the Waller yard given he gets in on the minimum. Double figures appeals. COSMIC CRUSADER (4) had every hope in the Underwood but ran well. Drawn well and ground no issue but it doesn't get any easier. LIGHT INFANTRY MAN (3) is a dual G1 winner this trip and is capable of running brutal tempos.

Palmerbet

Heavy 9 at Flemington and SIR DELIUS (2) is the one to beat defending his title over 2000m — fourth in the Makybe Diva when resuming, with good second-up figures and a rise in trip that suits, the query being whether he's still building toward a Cox Plate peak. AELIANA (5) is the danger third-up, having motored home for second behind a star last start, was a close-up fifth in this race last year and thrives with cut in the ground. LIGHT INFANTRY MAN (3) sets the tempo up front and won the Australian Cup at this trip when third-up last prep. SAINT GEORGE (13) is two from two at Flemington over 2000m and drops to 55kg off a game Naturalism second.

Best Bets

Looks only a moderate tempo. Light Infantry Man may lead. Reigning champ SIR DELIUS will relish the rise to 2000m and should be in front of his dangers when they straighten, an advantage given the likely lack of early pace. AELIANA was better second up. BUCKAROO has worked to the line soundly in both runs this prep. The rise in trip suits as does the drop from 59kg to 55kg (best weighted here against his rating). COSMIC CRUSADER should be competitive again. ZAHRANN steps up in grade after holding out SAINT GEORGE at Caulfield. LIGHT INFANTRY MAN is helped by his ability to race on the pace.

David Gately

The time-honoured Group 1 Turnbull Stakes is worth 750K to be run over 2000m. 5. AELIANA did nothing fresh up in a race that was not run to suit her, and she then finished runner-up in a 5-horse field last time out behind a champion mare at Randwick in the G2 Sunrise Stakes. She will be spot on for this, and with an extra 400m to travel being ideal, she can go one better. 2. SIR DELIUS had been trialling up a storm prior to finishing fourth fresh up in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600m, when many thought he could win. It will be a different story here over 2000m, and he can definitely set the record straight with a win in this. 11. BUCKAROO caught the eye with a solid finish in the Underwood Stakes here 2 weeks ago, and should now be peaking third up from a spell over a more favourable journey. He drops 4kg and can figure in the top 3 this time. 4. COSMIC CRUSADER is as honest as they come, and the thought is that he may prefer some cut in the ground to show his best. Go again.

Racing Central

A solid early tempo should suit AELIANA and SIR DELIUS settling just off the pressure, while COSMIC CRUSADER can build through the race and ZAHRANN should enjoy a handy forward position. AELIANA is the selection after a strong second in a G2 over 1600m last start, with G1 wins at 2000m and 2400m earlier in the campaign; the 2000m looks ideal. SIR DELIUS brings a G1 win over 1600m last start and another at 2000m, although the 59kg makes AELIANA's weight advantage significant. COSMIC CRUSADER was a G1 runner-up over 1800m last start and has the right setup, while ZAHRANN comes off a G3 win over 2000m with 55kg. AELIANA gets the nod, with SIR DELIUS and COSMIC CRUSADER the main dangers and ZAHRANN the map-and-weight runner capable of testing them.
