Game placings in the Turnbull and the Cox Plate (flushed out a bit early) read as very good form for this. Strong claims.

Third over 2040m at Flemington last start, completing a third consecutive top-three finish, and now deep into the campaign. Consistent G1 form and a proven staying range make her a major winning hope.

Charged home to win last run here. Racing consistently this preparation. William Pike rates highly aboard. Strong claims in this.

Racing well recently. At the latest run settled well back; won by 0.8 len in the G1 Ws Cox Plate at this track on October 24 over 2040m defeating Birdman carrying 59kg at $9.50. The start before that 4th of 18 in the G1 Caulfield Cup on October 17 over 2400m, 1.4 len behind Kingswood with 56kg at $4.80. Been the benchmark all Spring, no reason he can't win again.

Cox Plate winner who appreciated the fast tempo that day. Also won the Turnbull over this trip here. Hard to toss.

Won the Flemington 2040m G1 by 0.8 lengths last start, adding to a 2000m G1 victory earlier in the preparation; now sixth-up. Proven on good ground and holds strong claims.

The race before that 3rd in a small field in the G1 Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 10 over 2000m, 1.4 len behind Land Legend carrying 59kg at $4.40. Very good last time, if they go steadier he'll be suited.

Two Group 1 runs since the Underwood victory have been full of merit. Once again a leading contender.

Runner-up over 2040m at Flemington last start after a third over 2000m and a win over 1800m, now well into the campaign. The midfield map and consistent top-level form make him the one to beat.

Started at $5.00 and came in 6th last start at the track. Has the ability to turn things around and suited at this distance in the past. Definitely worth considering.

Most recently 6th of 12 in the G1 Ws Cox Plate at this track on October 24 over 2040m, 5 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 59kg at $5. The run before that sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 4th of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, in the wet; 3.5 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 59kg at $3. Bit disappointing in the Cox Plate, he can improve but is approaching D-Day.

Stable reported that he'd be improved by his Cox Plate run, where he was on pace in a fast-run race. Can hit back hard.

Was sixth over 2040m last start after finishing fourth in the 2000m G1 on heavy ground, and is now deep into the preparation with first-time blinkers. An earlier 2000m G1 win keeps him in contention, but he needs to rebound from the latest margins.

Showed a good turn of foot when 3rd last start at Geelong but matched against tougher rivals. Rising in weight. Very hard to have.

Second-up. First-up after two months 3rd of 13 in the G3 Geelong Cup on October 21 over 2400m, 2 len behind Point Of Law carrying 54kg at $15. Previously second-up ran last of 8 in the LR Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown on May 10 over 1609m, 12 len behind Catalina Delcarpio carrying 61kg at $19. Good at local debut but this is too tough.

Was picking up nicely late when placed in the Geelong Cup at local debut. Comes back in trip but will be improved.

Finished third in a Geelong G3 over 2400m last start and is now fourth-up, with the 2000m representing a 400m drop. The latest placing is encouraging, but this stronger grade leaves him an outsider.

The run before that ran second last in a small field in the G1 Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 10 over 2000m, 4.5 len behind Land Legend with 57kg at $12. Back in trip a plus but still has a bit to find.

Back in trip but thought her Caulfield Cup run was okay. Certainly has the class to figure in the thick of things here.

Finished seventh over 2400m last start after a fifth over 2000m and a G2 second over 1600m, now well into the current preparation. The return to 2000m is more suitable, but recent form needs to improve to threaten.

The race before that rolled along in front before being edged out 2nd of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on heavy track; 1.75 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 58kg at $26. Unsuited in Cox Plate, the Turnbull run has him a place hope.

Tired off a fast pace in the Cox Plate but the previous run was game. Not disgraced when fifth behind Via Sistina in this race last year.

Finished 11th over 2040m last start after running second in the Flemington 2000m G1 earlier in October, deep into the campaign. That course-and-distance second keeps him in the mix, but he needs to bounce back.

On a short back up. Brave effort to win narrowly last start at this track but facing stiffer opposition. Might be ridden for luck. Would rather look at others.

At the latest run favourite; won by a neck in the LR Melbourne Cup Day Plate at this track on November 3 over 1800m on a soft track defeating Darkbonee carrying 57kg at $2.60. The race before that 7th of 15 in the G1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield on October 10 over 1600m, 3 len behind Lady Shenandoah carrying 54kg at $8.50. Nice win Tuesday but this is a lot tougher.

Had excuses in his Caulfield runs at the elite level then got sweet trip, a gap when he needed it and was too strong down in class on Tuesday. Place.

Won the Flemington 1800m listed race on 3 November after finishing seventh in a Caulfield G1, five runs into the preparation. This quick return in a 2000m G1 presents a sharp test.

COSMIC CRUSADER (1) Ran on hard when winning last run at this venue. Jockey William Pike has been successful aboard previously. Very competitive this preparation. Strong chance.

Racing and Sports

Effectively a Cox Plate rematch, just run over 40m less. BIRDMAN (5) was held up and dashed through a gap there, briefly looking the winner before COSMIC CRUSADER (1) mowed him down to confirm his position as best middle distance horse in the country. They did go very fast there and he was (again) best suited. Perhaps they do again, but if they don't, BIRDMAN showed in the Underwood he has the turn of foot to beat the Crusader. AELIANA (10) had every chance in the Cox Plate the way the race was run but the winner came off her back and was simply too good. She raced like she wants further which she doesn't get, maybe the gate helps her get first run but early favourite is a stretch given the other two beat her last time. SIR DELIUS (3) was closer to the brutal speed in the Cox Plate but still underwhelmed a bit given he'd relished that scenario in the Autumn. He too looks like he wants further than 2000m. LIGHT INFANTRY MAN (2) went too quick there, the Turnbull 2nd has him a minor hope

Best Bets

Land Legend to make this truly run. AELIANA had to settle a few pairs further back than ideal from barrier 10 in the Cox Plate. COSMIC CRUSADER came from behind her, but she stuck to her task well. From barrier four, Aeliana can get a better run and make amends. BIRDMAN split them and looks a threat again. The stable reports were that SIR DELIUS would be fitter from his fair run in that race. Mounting-yard watchers suggested the stallion's mind was on other things. If he's relaxed pre-race, he's right in this. OMNI MAN ran on well in the Geelong Cup, albeit with 54kg in much lower grade.

LAND LEGEND (6) is likely to lead, with LIGHT INFANTRY MAN (2), SIR DELIUS (3) and ATTRITION (4) also expected to press forward. That pace should suit midfield runner BIRDMAN (5), giving him a suitable launch. BIRDMAN (5) was runner-up over 2040m at Flemington last start, following a third over 2000m and a G1 win over 1800m. AELIANA (10) finished third in that same 2040m race and has now recorded three consecutive top-three finishes. COSMIC CRUSADER (1) won the race by 0.8 lengths and also captured a G1 over 2000m earlier in the campaign. SIR DELIUS (3) is harder to assess after a sixth and a fourth in his latest two starts, but an earlier 2000m G1 win and first-time blinkers keep him in contention.
